Pet hair memorial jewellery in Quebec: keep them close to your heart

Pet hair memorial jewellery transforms a lock of your companion’s fur into a pendant, ring, or pair of earrings to wear every day. The process involves embedding the hair in high-quality resin, creating a tangible and lasting keepsake. In Quebec, this artisanal practice continues the tradition of commemorative jewellery and answers a deep need: honouring an irreplaceable bond.
At La Joie en Rose, we handcraft these pieces in our Quebec workshop, and we offer our Canadian clientele a fully prepaid turnkey shipping service.

The essentials

  • A small amount of hair is enough (about a teaspoon), collected from a living animal or kept after its passing.
  • In Canada, you receive a prepaid shipping kit at home containing a padded envelope, a tracking number, and a secure container.
  • Jewellery can be personalized with dried flowers, gold leaf, a lock of human hair, ashes, or your choice of colours.
  • Manufacturing is entirely Quebec-based, and shipping covers all of Canada as well as international destinations (France, the United States, Europe, and other locations).

Why choose pet hair jewellery to honour your companion?

In Quebec and across Canada, pets are no longer seen as just animals. They sleep in our beds, share our meals, and witness our joys and sorrows. For millions of people, a pet is a full-fledged member of the family.
When they leave us, the emptiness is overwhelming. Keeping a tangible reminder of them then becomes an essential need.

The unique bond between humans and animals

Quebec psychologist Annique Lavergne, who devoted her doctoral research to pet bereavement, confirms this clearly. While some people are barely affected by the loss of their animal, others can grieve for months or even years. The difficulty of mourning depends on the degree of attachment that existed between the owner and the animal. Sometimes, it is very similar to the grief of losing a loved one, a member of the family.

This view is supported by the Canadian Psychological Association, which recognizes that the death of a family pet can result in significant grief.

What makes this grief particular is also its often socially invalidated nature. Comments like “it was just an animal” add another layer of pain to an already difficult loss. Keeping a tangible object, whether a collar, a blanket or a lock of hair transformed into jewellery, becomes a gesture of personal recognition. A ritual for yourself.
Wearing a memorial piece is giving yourself permission to have loved deeply. It is also a daily reminder that this bond existed, that it was real, and that it still matters.
The great advantage of pet hair jewellery is that it can be ordered while your companion is still alive. It is a gift you give yourself today to honour the bond, without waiting for the inevitable.

The creation process: from lock of hair to finished jewellery

Turning a few strands of hair into wearable jewellery relies on precise craftsmanship. Every step matters to ensure the strength, beauty, and longevity of your piece. Here is how our artisan works in her Quebec workshop, from the moment your envelope arrives to the delivery of your finished jewellery.

High-quality resin

Not all resins are equal. At La Joie en Rose, we work with jewellery-grade resin, designed to preserve the transparency and beauty of your piece over the long term, provided you follow the care instructions included with your jewellery.
For those who wish to wear their jewellery without restrictions in everyday life (showers, swimming, bathing), we also offer the Waterproof Stone option, available on all settings (necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings). This option can be selected directly on the product page when placing your order.

Artistic integration (dried flowers, gold leaf, coloured background)

Beyond the hair itself, your jewellery can include decorative elements that tell your story. These additions are not just ornaments; they turn each piece into a unique creation.

Personalization options include:

  • 24-karat gold leaf for a timeless touch of light
  • Dried flowers (lavender, baby’s breath, pansy) to evoke a garden or a season
  • Coloured background to match your style (rose gold, midnight blue, opaline, transparent)
  • A lock of human hair combined with the pet hair for a multi-generational keepsake
  • Your pet’s ashes, for an even more personal memorial
  • Engraved initials or a micro-charm on the back of the pendant

This personalization turns the piece into a true small reliquary. One client once shared that she wanted to include lavender from the garden where her dog liked to sleep. Another asked for a gold leaf to echo her pet’s coat colour. Each piece becomes a reflection of a singular relationship.

If you would like a setting that does not appear in our catalogue, we gladly accept custom requests (standard fee of $75, non-refundable, to cover the time spent sourcing the perfect piece).

How to order your memorial jewellery in Canada?

Sending your material by mail is often a source of anxiety for those discovering this kind of service. It is understandable: this is a precious, sometimes irreplaceable object. Good news for our Canadian clientele: we have designed a fully prepaid turnkey shipping service that removes all the logistical burden from your shoulders.

Infographic La Joie en Rose in 5 steps: place an order on the website, receive a prepaid shipping kit at home, collect the hairs, mail the envelope to a post office counter and track its arrival, receive the finished souvenir jewelry.

Step 1: Place your order on our site

You choose your model, your personalization options, and finalize your order online. You immediately receive a confirmation email containing detailed instructions (please check your spam folder).

Step 2: Receive your prepaid shipping kit (Canada only)

Within 5 to 9 business days after your order, you receive a package at home, prepared specifically for you, containing the following:
A prepaid padded envelope with a Canada Post tracking number
Pre-addressed to La Joie en Rose
A secure container to place the lock of hair
You do not need to buy an envelope or visit a post office to pay for registered mail. Everything is included.

Step 3: Collect the hair with respect

A strand of hair is enough in the vast majority of cases. For a living animal, a gentle brushing or a small, discreet trim from the back of the neck or the tail will do. For an animal that has recently passed, collection before cremation or burial provides the necessary amount.

Important: Always keep a small quantity of hair at home as a backup.
Never send us the totality of what you have.
This precaution ensures that you can always send us more material if needed.

Step 4: Mail your envelope and follow its arrival

Drop off your envelope at any post office. You can check the arrival of your precious package directly on our dedicated tracking page.

Step 5: Let your jewellery come to life

Current production time is estimated between 16 and 20 weeks from the reception of your material. This timeframe may vary depending on the time of year (holidays, vacations). You will receive an email with your tracking number as soon as your jewellery is ready to ship.

For orders outside Canada: check with your local post office for secure shipping options.

Pendants and necklaces

The pendant remains a timeless classic. Worn close to the heart, it combines discretion and strong symbolism. We offer several formats: elongated teardrop, round medallion, heart shape, or contemporary geometric design. Each pendant can be paired with a chain in sterling silver, gold, or stainless steel, depending on your preference.

Rings

Rings require particularly careful craftsmanship as they face daily wear and tear. Our resin is designed to withstand regular use.

Earrings

For those who wish to carry the memorial keepsake every day without it being overly visible, earrings offer an elegant solution.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) on pet hair jewellery

A teaspoon is enough in the vast majority of cases. If in doubt, send a little more. Always keep a small quantity at home as a precaution: we ask our clientele never to send the totality of their available material.

The padded envelope we provide includes a Canada Post tracking number, which allows you to follow your shipment in real time. The loss of a registered mail item is statistically very rare. That is also why we systematically recommend keeping a small quantity of hair at home: if the unexpected ever happens, you can always send us more material.

The current processing time is estimated between 16 and 20 weeks from the moment we receive your material at our workshop. Postal delivery time is added to this estimate. Special orders may take a little longer.

No, our pieces do not yellow under normal conditions of use, thanks to our quality resin. We use a jewellery-grade resin that preserves transparency over the long term. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or contact with chemical products (chlorine, perfumes, household cleaners) can, however, affect the resin. The care instructions included with each piece will help you preserve its beauty over time.

Absolutely. It is even a very beautiful way to celebrate your companion while they are still with you and to avoid the stress of a postmortem collection. Many owners do so on their pet’s birthday or in anticipation of a medical procedure. Your order has no expiration date: you can send us your material whenever you are ready.

Once the resin is fully cured, the piece is not damaged by occasional contact with water. However, we recommend removing it during showers, swimming, and when cleaning with harsh chemicals. Also avoid prolonged contact with perfumes and sunscreens, which can affect metal finishes over time.
For more carefree everyday wear, you can choose the Waterproof Stone option on any setting: necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings. It is available directly on each product page; simply select it when placing your order.

You may cancel your order with a full refund within 2 days of purchase. Beyond this deadline, but before we receive your material, a 50% refund of the total invoice is possible. After we receive your material, a 10% refund of the total invoice applies. This policy reflects the fact that the components needed for production are custom-ordered for you.

Yes. We ship throughout Quebec (Montreal, Quebec City, Gatineau, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières, and more), as well as all other Canadian provinces: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Maritimes, and territories. The prepaid shipping kit service is offered for all orders delivered within Canada.
